Opened in 1892 as The Union Gospel Tabernacle. Built by steamboat Captain Thomas Ryman after hearing a stirring sermon by local preacher Samuel P. Jones.
After his death in 1904 the building was renamed The Ryman Auditorium, in honor of Mr. Ryman.

The Ryman Auditorium. Built as a church in 1892. Hosted the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 - 1974. Underwent a multi million dollar restoration and re-opened in 1994.

The acoustics at The Ryman are the 2nd best in the world. The Mormon Tabernacle in salt Lake City has the best. The Ryman was designated " A National Historic Landmark " in 2001

A who's who of Country Music has performed on this stage.
Pollstar Magazine has named The Ryman "Theatre of The Year" in 2003 and 2004.

I did take the Backstage Tour, it was well worth the couple of extra dollars. There are no pic's of the Backstage, cameras weren't allowed.

A 2 year, $ 8.5 million restoration was begun. Air conditioning was installed. The roof was re-inforced to accommodate a modern sound system and lighting system. Re-opened in 1994 as an intimate concert venue.

The Grand Ole Opry was broadcast from The Ryman from 1943 until 1974. After that, The Ryman sat vacant and fell into dis-repair. In 1992 Emmy Lou Harris gave a series of concerts here, which sparked interest in restoring The Ryman.
