The Battle of Stones River happened between Dec. 31st, 1862 and Jan. 2nd, 1863.
42,000 Union Troops under the Command of Gen. William
Rosecrans did Battle with a Confederate Army of 34,000 troops under the Command of
Gen. Braxton Bragg. Considered tactically indecisive there were heavy casualties, 23,515 total. (13,249 Union, 10,266 Confederate)
Of the 4,000 acres of the original Battlefield only 708 acres make up the State Park.
The rest is privately owned.
Established as, Stones River National Military Park on March 3rd, 1927.
Designated as a National Battlefield on April 22,1960.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in October of 1966.
