During the 1800's Nashville was known as "The Athens of The South". That's what influenced the decision to build The Parthenon for the celebration of Nashville's centennial in 1897.The Centennial and International Exposition (World's Fair) were held on the surrounding grounds, May 1st 1897 to October 31st 1897. The area is known as Centennial Park.

The interior houses an art gallery, featuring 19th and 20th Century paintings by American artists. There is also a 42 ft. tall statue of Athena. ( Athena Parthenos / Athena The Virgin ) Companion of Heroes / The Goddess of Heroic Endeavour.

Originally built in plaster, wood, and brick, in the 1920's it was rebuilt in concrete.

The Parthenon is part of Nashville's Metro Park system and is on the National Register of Historical Places.

It is an exact replica of The Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
