Traveler's Rest, built in 1799, was the home to Judge John Overton (1766-1833).
Judge Overton was friend to, and  law partner of Andrew Jackson. The Judge was also Jackson's personal advisor, and campaign manager during Jackson's presidential bid.
Judge Overton played a significant roll in the political and economic devolopment of Tennessee.
In addition to being a successful lawyer and influential Judge, Overton was also a successful farmer and land speculator. He, Andrew Jackson, and James Winchester ( see Cragfont ) are credited with establishing the settlement of Memphis in the early1800's
