Riverview at Hobson Grove is also known as Riverview
and / or Hobson House. The Riverview comes from the near
by Barren River. It was the home of Atwood Gaines Hobson
and his wife Juliet Van Meter Hobson. Construction was
started in the 1850's, but was halted do the outbreak of the
Civil War.
During the Winter of 1861 to 1862 the basement
of the incomplete house was used as a munitions magazine. Bowling
Green was the Capitol of the Confederacy.
The Mansion was finally completed in 1872. The Hobson
Family and their descendants lived in the Mansion until 1952.
Abandoned with some fire damage and condemned in 1965
the City of Bowling Green bought the property with the
intention of razing the Mansion to make room for
construction of a golf course. The Mansion was
saved by a non-profit orginization, the Hobson
House Association. The Mansion was restored to
a Victorian style, and reflects the life of a prosporous Southern Victorian Family.
Opened for Public Tours in 1972.
Added to the National register of Historic Places on February 23,
1972.
