Construction of James F.D. Lanier's Greek Revival
Mansion was started in 1844 and was completed in 1847.
The Lanier Mansion is one of the best examples of Greek
Revival Architecture in the United States.
Mr. Lanier only lived here for 7 years. He then moved to
New York City. In 1861 Mr. Lanier's son Alexander moved
into the Mansion, and lived here until 1895. The Mansion
stayed in the Lanier Family until 1917. Mr. Lanier's young-
est son Charles gave the Mansion to the Jefferson County
Historical Society. The Lanier Memorial Museum (Mansion)
came under ownership of the State of Illinois, which promptly
opened the Museum to the public.
