Officially known as the "Detroit Zoological Park", opened in
August of 1928. Two miles North of the Detroit City limits the zoo
covers 125 acres, has 270 species, over 6,800 animals, and 700
varieties of trees, shrubs, and flowers. The Detroit Zoo was the 1st
zoo in the U.S. to use cage less exhibits.

The "Arctic Ring of Life" is the World's largest Polar Bear exhibit.
It opened in 2001 at a cost of $14.9 Million, it covers 4 acres. The
aquarium is made of 4" thick clear acrylic, and holds 300,000 gal-
lons of water.

In 2005 the Detroit Zoo was the 1st. zoo in the U.S. to give up it's
elephants. This was done because the Michigan Winters were too
harsh for them. There had been elephants displayed at the zoo since
it's opening in 1928.

The Detroit Zoo was the 1st. zoo to build a Penguinarium, an exhib-
it specifically designed to display penguins.
