Construction of The Capitol Building was started in 1845 and complteted in 1859. It was designed by noted Philadelphia archetect William Strickland ( who also designed the tower of Independence Hall). The design is Greek Revival stlye

During the Civil War (1862) The Capitol fell under Union control and remained so until the end of the war. (1865) The building was known as Fort Johnson during Union occupation( after Tennessee's military governor ).

By the 1950's the exterior was becoming badly deteriorated and underwent a restoration.

During the 1980's several areas of the interior were restored to their 1895 appearance, including period carpeting and furnishings.

In 1957 interior renovations were started.

Polk Tomb

Architect William Strictland died before the building was completed and is entombed in the N.E. corner of the building ( a tomb he designed ) His son overseen the completion.

President James Polk and his wife are buried in the east lawn.
