The original structure was built in 1881. It housed the Phoenix Cotton Mill,and at it's peak the complex
had 250,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space. By 1910 the building was vacant.
Original automobile production started in 1906, in Jackson, Tn by The Southern Engine & Boiler Works.
Engineer William Collier designed the autos, which were known as Southerns.
In 1910 Nashville investors bought, and brought the automobile production to Nashville. The autos
were renamed The Marathon in honor of the 1904 Olympics

By 1913 production was 200 cars a month, with an ultimate goal of 10,000 cars a year. Production
was barely keeping up with demand. 12 different models of The Marathon were available There were Marathon dealerships located
in every major city in the US. There were also several European dealerships. South America, and China also had dealerships.
The company went through 3 presidents in 4 years Bad investments and poor management decisions
doomed the company. Production of The Marathon ended in Nashville ended in 1914
