the gilmore car museum grew out of what was
a hobby for donald gilmore. in 1963 mrs. gilmore
presented her husband with a birthday present. it
was a 1920 pierce arrow. it was a project car, and
with help from friends the car was restored. this
was the beginning of Mr. gilmores' "hobby", which
soon grew to 30 cars. needing room to keep his
growing collection, mr. gilmore purchased 90
acres of farm property. mrs. gilmore suggested the
idea of turning the collection into a museum so
that future generations could enjoy the cars.
a non-profit foundation was set formed and the
museum opened to the public for the first time on
July 31, 1966.
Mr. gilmore passed away in 1979, mrs. gilmore passed
